DIONE – (DI)scretized (O)ffshore waves to (NE)arshore

Together with Van Oord and Boskalis, Aktis developed the (DI)scretized (O)ffshore waves to (NE)arshore tool, or DIONE for short. While development with Van Oord and Boskalis helped to get DIONE off of the ground, we at Aktis have taken the development of the tool into our own hand.

DIONE is a set of pre/post-processing tools for the SWAN model designed for coastal wave propagation with access to Aktis’ online databases. It enables you to quickly compute nearshore wave climates anywhere in the world in one neat package. It streamlines the use of SWAN, providing a graphical-user-interface (GUI) to help steer you through the many tools of the suite. DIONE allows the user to calibrate offshore wind and wave data against external sources (satellite, wave buoy, etc.), partition wave spectra, and run the SWAN model in stationary mode all within the suite, with user-friendly physical and numerical checks. In short, Dione helps with the following:

  •  It helps visualize the area of interest, the bathymetry, and it supports the grid design process;
  •  It enables the user to propagate a full offshore climate or dedicated runs to multiple locations with a quick turn around time;
  •  It is designed to be used to determine both ambient and extreme conditions;
  •  It provides the user with sanity checks to make sure the results are numerically and physically sound;
  •  It delivers nearshore statistics at output locations of the users’ choosing;
  •  It automatically generates a report at each project step for further reference and quality control.
